Substance abuse among adults is one of the fastest growing health problems facing our country, and a surprising number of us struggle with drug or alcohol issues. Our health and lifestyles can place us at significant risk for prescription drug abuse and addiction. Diagnosis may be difficult because symptoms of substance use disorder in adults can mimic symptoms of other medical and behavioral disorders that are common, such as diabetes, depression and dementia. When we feel disapproval of, or shame about our use, we can be reluctant to seek professional help for what many consider a private matter. This can exasperate the problem.
